Fixing up the Spitfire (car)
This where it all started for me - with model aeroplanes. About 16 years ago, we were expecting our first child. I had always wanted to fly a model Aeroplane & this felt like my last chance. The model was built in the spare room at my mother-in-laws where we were staying for a while.

The plane did fly – once - with a hand launch, but never made it in to the air unaided. I now know that this was due to the engine being underpowered (an OS .35 FP) & the plane not properly set up.

I got an OS .40 SR for less than £20 from e-bay the other day – see the video next to this text – it started first time & I’ve got a feeling that this is a really powerfull edition of the .40 sized engine.

The plane came down from the loft last night. It looks a little sad, but I’m sure I can bring it back to life!

Update Summer 2007. She flew! A few small repairs need - but a sucess I think. See picks at the bottom of this page - see if you can see the plane - including the one just before it crashed.
The Hi-Boy is now back to former glory – or hopefully better than that.

I spent an evening fixing & installing bits & pieces. The covering got re-stretched & stuck down in places – using a dedicated covering iron.

The engine mounting holes were re-drilled for the OS .40, the engine mounted. Radio control was installed – making sure that everything worked the right way round (servos can be reversed on the transmitter), that nothing snagged or could come loose and wires were either stuck down with Duct tape or tucked out of the way.

The under carriage was shorted – to make it lighter and look better & larger wheels added to cope with the taking off on grass.

The C of G was checked – about 70mm from the leading edge of the wing – which I marked with white masking tape & put dots on the exact spot. The plane weighs 2.4 kg.
Radio control frequency number 58.

Model number 4 - as stored on the computer with my radio control transmitter.
